Card Choices
Creeping Tar Pit vs Darkslick Shores: Creeping Tar Pit is the perfect example of cutting speed for card advantage. While it was perfectly fine in a slower meta, I don't think it's a very good time for it. Darkslick Shores on the otherhand is perfect for what we want, untapped mana fixing without the sacrifice of life. The real kicker here was the ability to cut a land. Creeping Tar Pit is not a fan of being the lone land on the play with a hand full of cantrips, while Darkslick Shores excels in that situation.
Doom Blade: The reason for running Doom Blade over Go for the Throat is pretty obvious. Affinity and Infect are probably going to be everywhere, while almost all black decks run mostly non-black creatures. The reason I run Doom Blade over Terminate at all is partially for mana considerations, and partially for Master of Waves. Vial/Cavern + Master of Waves is a beating.
Crypt Incursion: Looks pretty awful, but it's surprisingly great. It provides life gain for the Burn matchup (you're often going to kill 2-4 of their creatures and you can always point a Thought Scour at them since they don't have any way of utilizing their graveyard) and comes in handy against graveyard dependent decks like Living End and Grishoalbrand.
Anger of the Gods: I think Anger is the best 3 mana sweeper for the deck. I was really interested in Flaying Tendrils because it's capable of hitting the cards we want to exile most (Voice of Resurgence and Kitchen Finks) while also hitting Master of Waves and Etched Champion. The only problem is, Flaying Tendrils is awful against Wild Nacatl, which I expect to be on the rise. I would prefer Damnation to deal with the slower threats (like Master of Waves and Etched Champion) and Anger of the Gods deal with the faster threats rather than hitting somewhere in the middle.
Vendilion Clique: I think Clique is very well positioned right now and especially well positioned for this deck. It's great against our worst matchups, Burn, Tron, and Eldrazi, giving us a fast clock and disruption at instant speed. I'm especially interested in Clique against Eldrazi and their Relics. This matchup is a huge reason I cut a Gurmag Angler, and Clique being able to cycle a 7 mana 5/5 is very attractive.
Spell Pierce/Inquisition: I think this is the most flexible slot in the deck, but I would definitely recommend some form of 1 mana interaction. I think Spell Pierce is better positioned than Dispel for the maindeck. The linear aggro decks are usually not going to be able to pay the 2 extra mana and Spell Pierce, unlike Dispel, has text against Tron (although I don't think it's great against them). Inquisition is a cheap efficient way of breaking up combo decks and taking some fuel from the aggro decks, but it's not very good against Tron and it's not tempo positive like Spell Pierce usually is. I'm slightly leaning towards Pierce, but I'm really torn on this slot so if you have an opinion, please let it be known
